By Order Of The Moose

By Order Of The Moose Quantity in Basket: None
Price: $15.00
Artist: El Goodo

Welsh psych-pop band El Goodo return with their long awaited third album. Recorded over the course of eight years in an old derelict cinema in their home village of Resolven, the album is a continuation of where the band left off with their previous effort “Coyote” (2010). Wielding the wide open spaces of spaghetti westerns with the close melodic harmonies of girl groups and the good humor of “Nuggets”-inspired garage rock n' roll, El Goodo takes you on a trip through their fascination with 60’s music – they are obviously a band enthralled by the past. The album was recorded on a 16-track with a small collection of faulty equipment, creating a collection of melodic pop songs, embellished with strings, brass, sitars, harmonicas, xylophones, and vocal harmonies (and then seemingly covered it all with dust), that you'd expect to find on some forgotten 60’s record that someone has stumbled upon in their attic. From the first recording in November 2008 that began with the track "When", the album took eight years to complete. Initially thinking it would only take them a few months, they set out to record at The Music Box in Cardiff. Two years later they decamped back to their village, to the Resolven Miners' Welfare Hall. "It Makes Me Wonder" is their interpretation of a 60’s girl group song. The opening track "Sit & Wonder" was an attempt to do something like Zager & Evans's "In The Year 2525", but it didn't turn out like that. The lyrics were based on war films like “Come And See”, “Ivan's Childhood”, and “Red Dawn”. "So It Goes" was meant to be like a Marty Robbins cowboy song but ended up being more like a Nuggets track. “In the time taken to make this album a frilled shark could have given birth twice, an elephant four times and a giraffe eight. It’s been quite a gestation. For all of that, it is cohesive and thoroughly enjoyable, belying any of the difficulties encountered during its production. It has a humorous Western theme but one that is kept carefully controlled and doesn’t fall into comedy or pastiche. The runs of these tracks are also interspersed with other songs conveying very different emotions that engage on another level entirely. Even amongst the Western tracks, the band provides plenty of surprises, as if the genre is being cross-bred to produce the most unexpected hybrid. So, whilst ‘I Sit And Wonder’ makes a direct reference in the lyrics to the Western, ‘those guns are smoking’, this track is like Ennio Morricone meets ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. The vocals are as unsettling as the Umpa Lumpas singing after Augustus Gloop has gone up the pipe. ‘September’ is more reflective, harmonies on horseback, and ‘So It Goes’ has us with the Mexicans in a town ready for a shoot-out. The rising refrain, ‘Oh oh oh, so it goes’ is as catchy as the theme from ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’. ‘When’ is Tarantino in a poncho, keeping the flies out of his eyes in a big black hat. Other tracks draw on the heritage of the 60’s. ‘Five In The Morning’ has the narrative and musical quality of The Kinks, and is one of the more pensive tracks. Most touching is ‘Susan and Bill’, a timeless piece of music about parenthood. Predominantly acoustic, the piece has Beach Boys’ harmonies and is evocative of The Beatles’ ballads about their families. Of great intrigue, are the songs inspired by 60’s girl groups. ‘It Makes Me Wonder’ is just that but sung with Pixy Jones’s voice not Ronnie Spector’s. It includes classic beehive pining, ‘my heart is aching…so now I get on with my life.’ ‘It’s All Over’ is about the near break-up of the band but could easily be a bubble gum pop song. Two minutes of super-sweetness. The Good, The Beautiful and The Unassailable. The Magnificent El Goodo. “ – GodIsInTheTVZine.co.uk GREAT!!
