After
two splendid albums in tribute to the Bee Gees (2022) and the Los Brincos
(2023), Coke Belda returns with a fabulous new album of his own songs. There are no radical changes or outlandish
surprises in the proposal of this exquisite craftsman of pop with classic
influences (Beatles, Kinks, New Wave...), but it is a more ambitious album in
production and arrangements. A splendid
album full of great luminous, energetic, subtle and contagious songs. “Love is this
and love is that, and that should be about it as far definitions of the
grandest, often elusive emotion are concerned.
But, of course, it isn’t, being much more than that, no matter how you
look at it.
Love is more than an easy-to-define
feeling. Just ask Coke Belda, who, on
the occasion of his seventh collection of peerless pop, has taken on the task
of defining love in a dozen, shall we say lovely, musical missives. He has, as you might imagine, having
followed, and loved, Coke’s previous six collections, hit the nail on the head. But notice the
head of love surrounding you. There is
plenty of room for varying definitions, for debate, for singing the songs of
all kinds of love. Within this album, it is asserted, with Coke’s usual
finesse, that love is pain, blind, here, there and everywhere. Love is sad and heavy. Love is, also,
semantics, which no doubt opens a bee’s nest of sweet honey and stingers. Love is just about everything imaginable, in
point of fact—this, that, and the other things that cry out for our attention
as we embrace this most pure and alive emotion. On this album
all about love, that most worthy of emotions, Coke has composed just over a
half hours’ worth of extremely catchy, melody-rich songs that will at least
start the ball rolling toward a better understanding of, well, you know.”
