“Quaranteenage
Kicks” by Gallows Birds is an album most obviously inspired by the early Beach
Boys. With the dark cloud of a pandemic hanging over him, Travis Woods found
joy in creating a universe where little matters beyond girls, cars,
surfing, and sunshine. But the beaches
are off limits and the Lambretta's been under a tarp since last summer. So he
picks up a guitar and begins writing some new tunes - summer tunes, beach
tunes. Tunes inspired by girls, scooters, surfboards, the Beach Boys, the
Ramones. Before long, there's a whole record's worth, written and recorded to a
click track. Glenn Welman, himself quarantined at home in
Johannesburg, South Africa, records some drums tracks, and sends it off to yet
another restless quarantiner - Richie Holes in New York for vocals. Before long, from cities across the globe,
the three have completed a full LP. A
collaboration among three friends, thousands of miles apart, who have never
once met in real life who’ve created the perfect soundtrack to chase away those
quarantine blues. "A global pandemic album somewhere between Beach
Boys , Ramones , Graham Parker and The Feelies with really great songs! For me,
‘Quaranteenage Kicks’ is going up and down on heavy rotation. If you miss this
album, you ride a recumbent bike and think a Lambretta is ice cream!" -
Pretty In Noise "Besides the Beach
Boys, other influences at play include the Ramones, Lookout! Records garage pop
combos like The Hi-Fives and Smugglers, and even some old new wave pub rock
(the band covers both Graham Parker ‘Local Girls’ and ‘Someone Must’ve Nailed
Us Together’ Wreckless Eric's band the Len Bright Combo, along with Brian
Wilson’s ‘Dance Dance Dance’). Kicking off with the upbeat ‘Back to the Beach’,
this album wastes little time setting a tone. This is a high-spirited rock and
roll record with a heavy pop-punk influence. These are songs that will make you
feel good. Gallows Birds are the international pop-punk surf rock and roll
super group the world needed." – FasterAndLouder.com GREAT!!
